Reports suggest that Sam Mendes might be considering George MacKay to portray one of the Beatles in his upcoming biopics.

The news follows rumours that Mendes was also eying actor Paul Mescal for a role in the films, but it is unknown whether Mescal and MacKay are in contest for the same role at this point in time.

George MacKay first gained significant recognition for his role as Lance Corporal Schofield in the 2019 war film 1917, directed by the aforementioned Sam Mendes. He is currently set to star as an unannounced character in Joshua Oppenheimer’s upcoming musical, ‘The End’.

Announced back in February, Mendes will be directing four Beatles biopic projects, each narrated from the perspective of a different band member. These biopics will intersect to “tell the story of the greatest band in history.”

Mendes mentioned that he was “honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”

The project is the first instance where Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles — Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, along with the families of John Lennon and George Harrison — have granted complete life story and music rights for a scripted film.

With Sony Pictures Entertainment set to finance and distribute Mendes’ tetralogy, which are set to have a global release in 2027, the band stated, “the dating cadence of the films, the details of which will be shared closer to release, will be innovative and groundbreaking.”

George MacKay is represented by United Talent Agency (UTA).
